Robyn Cairney, a teen from Scotland, is a vegetarian. Like many teens today, she is an avid animal lover, and practices vegetarianism for that very reason.

She also has a pig heart valve keeping her alive.

Cairney, a mobile phone sales consultant of Ruckazie, Glasgow, was diagnosed with aortic stenosis and regurgitation, a rare cardiac condition that resulted in her collapsing at the gym. While unaware of the condition in her body, Cairney suffered from a narrowing aorta, causing her blood to flow back to her heart. Read more

“PETA-Like Discussion” – Where’s The Line?

Recently a forum thread I was participating in (not here) was deleted by the forum moderators. Not locked - deleted - and I trust you can see the severity of the difference. Outright deletion of threads is generally reserved for the "worst of the worst" offenders.  

The crime?  "PETA-like discussion."  

This is a forum with a  predominately rural demographic, a forum where several members have anti-vegetarian slurs and "jokes" permanently displayed in their forum signatures.  I have learned to tread carefully.  I habitually avoid passing judgment, and stick to simply stating facts.  I didn't say anything you wouldn't find inside the pages of Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" or Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma."

If I were a racehorse who spent all of my life running my guts out just so people could waste their money, lose their houses and alienate their spouses by betting on me outrunning another horse—not a penny of which is given to me, of course—I would expect a damn good retirement package. A stable on a hill, maybe, with plenty of room to gallop as I please (no jockey on my back, thank you very much), plenty of hay, some carrots, and maybe a nice chenille blanket to cozy up with.
