If you’re planning on becoming a vegan, you’re already a vegan and want some new recipes, or you are simply a fan of Alicia Silverstone, you may want to check out The Kind Diet. Silverstone’s approach to a vegan diet plan, complete with recipes and reasoning behind a vegan diet, The Kind Diet is coming to bookstores near you in October.
Silverstone, 32, makes the case that a vegan diet isn’t only humane toward animals—it’s also healthy for people. She says that it’s high in protein and fiber as well as low in fat and cholesterol, and negates the claims that most people make regarding its lack of variety. Instead, she presents veganism as a delicious and even decadent way to eat.
In her Health.com interview, Silverstone says, “Once you’re informed, then you can be really gentle and kind to yourself, by giving yourself all the gifts life has to offer—like mental clarity and vitality—all while making the planet better.” She also says that being a vegan makes you “more juicy,” “light,” “younger” (looking) and “sparkling.” It will also, according to Silverstone, make you have clear skin, more energy, and better digestion.
Silverstone also says that the compost heap she keeps is so delicious that you might want to eat it!
In the book, she also divulges why she became a vegan herself, more health benefits from a plant-based diet, and how meat, milk, fish and cheese contribute to diseases and environmental destruction. Though she had diabetic family members growing up, she never really gave much thought about her diet until she was in her early 20’s. Silverstone says that while earlier thoughts about dieting were based on her career, now it’s all about being healthy and humane.
Recipes include full meals as well as desserts, and focus on meeting all of one’s nutritional needs. There are three separate levels in the book. Flirts is for vegan beginners, and covers reducing meat intake and food-swapping—not veganism in its entirety just yet. Vegans includes skipping animal products entirely, though still eating convenience foods, and Superhero has everything you need to become a macrobiotic diet champion living off of mostly veggies and whole grains.
Silverstone has also teamed up with EcoTools, a cruelty-free environmentally-friendly company to make her own line of beauty products. She says they will include makeup bags and brushes made out of bamboo, hemp and recycled materials.
