Hug a Vegetarian Day, which takes place on September 24, is fun whether you’re a vegetarian or not. After all, who couldn’t use a hug? You might wonder why you should hug a vegetarian anyway, especially if you’re not a supporter of animal rights. Vegetarians help the earth, too—a plant-based diet only uses a fraction of the energy and only creates a fraction of the waste a meat-based diet does. So if you normally hug people who bring reusable bags to the grocery store or who recycle their aluminum, go ahead and hug a vegetarian while you’re at it.
To kick off the big event, PETA—of course!—has plenty of fun activities planned as well as freebies to give away. You can join the “International Hug a Vegetarian Day” event on Facebook here, where you can highlight the event on your social networking pages and invite friends to join with you. It’s probably the easiest way to spread the word about events these days, and you don’t even have to create anything; just click join, then invite your friends.
But perhaps the most fun thing to take part in is the cool free Hug a Vegetarian Day Action Pack! PETA is known for some grisly photos and stickers, but they also produce really insightful, important information, as well as some pretty cute stuff, too. This year’s pack is definitely one of the more adorable ones. It features four designs:
- A black background covered in blue, yellow, and orange stars with a bold, sort of retro looking text that reads, “HUG ME, I’m a Vegetarian!”
- The PETA trademark “I am Not a Nugget” sticker with a cute cartoon chick
- The most adorable little tofu guy I’ve ever seen—okay, the ONLY little tofu guy I’ve ever seen—featured with the text, “Tofu Makes Me So-So Happy”—also featured with stars and a heart*
- A cute, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movie-ish striped background with a heart that reads, “I hugged a vegetarian today.”
*Okay, I have to stop to wonder at this. The point of PETA is to not eat food with a face, which is a very admirable goal, considering how animals in the food industry are treated. So why give tofu a face when we can feel not-guilty about eating it as it is? It’s definitely adorable, but it’s a little disjointed. Just sayin’!
Each pack also comes with the PETA “Save 100 Animals” leaflet set, perfect for giving out to friends, on campus, at parties, or during pub crawls. You can see all of the stickers and order the free action pack here.
