Support More Veggie Options at Kauffman Stadium
A vegetarian ballpark sounds like something out of a fairytale, right up there with true self-cleaning ovens and unicorns who don’t poop on the sidewalk. But PETA (love them or hate them!) has been working to get more ballparks to serve veggie options over the years.
In fact, they release their North American Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks list each year. Who knew that the Phillies, Braves (one of my home team’s rivals), Giants, Astros, Tigers, Rockies, White Sox, Orioles, Padres, Cubs (another rival! C’mon, Cardinals, get with the veggie program), and Brewers were so veg-friendly? More and more teams are joining the veggie wagon, serving options that appeal to a wider audience in bold, creative ways.
You can visit the website to find out more about each ballpark and its respective options. (Fake Philly cheese steak sandwiches? Seriously? Sign me up!)
It turns out that my St. Louis Cards did get an honorable mention for its veggies, stir frys, and salad options, which I love—and several other teams, including the Dodgers, Marlins, Rays, Pirates, Athletics, and Nationals. Way to go, teams!
But it’s sad to note that many ballparks still aren’t even in the, well, ballpark when it comes to being vegetarian-friendly.
And it’s not that I want them to all start selling veggie dogs immediately and to scrap everything else—though that might be healthier and better on the planet!—it’s that they should all carry plenty of veggie options for those fans who love their game and their vegetarian fare.
Kauffman Stadium is one such stadium. Royals fans have to make do with little to no vegetarian options, which is just sad. Not only are fans missing out on healthier, cholesterol-free options, the stadium is shunning a community of sports fans who would love to buy lunch while they watch the game.
PETA is urging people to courteously (seriously, they are asking for “a polite email”) contact Dan Glass, the president of the Royals, and ask him to add at least one meatless-meat option to the menu at Kauffman Stadium. Seeing as major chains like BK can do it, I’m confident that the Royals can pull through with it, too!
If you’d like to participate and call for some veggie ball-food fare, click here to send your letter. Remember to be polite and be sure to mention it if you’re a Royals fan who would really appreciate some menu items that would appeal to you and your family.
